How often do need to get my electrical appliances tested?

For the most common environments, Chappo's Test n Tag recommend the following frequencies: 3 months Building, construction and demolition - 6 months Factories, warehouses and production - 12 months, An environment where the equipment/supply cord is prone to flexing or open to abuse - 5 yearly, An environment where the equipment/supply cord is not prone to flexing or open to abuse.

Frequency for building, construction and demolition

The most strict of all industries require testing every three months due to their sheer hostility. These include people working on building and construction sites or demolition. Often marine is also included to this list of harsh environments. A lot of the information relating to these environments fall under the AS/NZS 3012 Standard. In addition to stricter intervals, you're also required to use particular test and tag colours at certain times of the year. These colours will change every three months, coinciding with your periodic testing.

AS/NZS 3760 Standards

In the Australian Standard AS 3760, it specifies that the amount of time between testing and tagging is based upon the type of environment that appliance is located in. It's also important to remember that some businesses undertake their own risk assessment. This means they might have a different test and tag frequency which is more frequent than what's specified. This is of course absolutely fine, whereas testing less frequently is not acceptable.

WHAT HAPPENS IF AN ITEM FAILS THE TEST?

Occasionally items will fail our inspection and will be required to be withdrawn from service. We will take responsibility to report the defective item, label it correctly and notify you of the issues. Depending on the type of item and/or damage, we may be able to provide repairs to fix the problem.

WHY DO I NEED TO TEST AND TAG MY APPLIANCES?

A well planned program of preventive maintenance, with regular electrical safety checks, is the ideal way to avoid unnecessary and unfortunate accidents, as well as the legal ramifications that follow. This gives you piece of mind knowing that you and your family are safe, as are your staff and collegues... plus your tools, office equipment and appliances are kept in a safe working order.

If you do not comply with the electrical specification, you risk your company being found negligible and liable completely for a workplace accident. Your insurance may refuse your claim or potentially cancel your account. This may influence future insurers covering your company or incur increased account coverage expenses. Your company may also be fined, penalised or if the accident was severe, face possible Imprisonment.
